Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley First Edition Hardcover Very Good Book
The story, in three volumes, of Lawrie Todd, and his adventures settling into the new world. Galt drew on his experiences in setting up The Canada Company in Canada West, although he placed this novel in New York State. An eye-opener as to what it was really like to live in those times, and establish a home in the wilderness. Probably an ex-library copy, as the word "withdrawn" is stamped on end papers of Vol 1 and Vol 3. Professionally rebound in maroon buckram, with matching leather label with gold lettering on spine. Some very slight spotting, but overall, a tight, beautiful set. 18.6 cm x 12.5 cm x 3 cm (7-1/2" x 5") 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Ex-Library.

Galt wrote this novel in 1826, as a riotous and uninhibited finale to the series of novels for which he had become celebrated. However it was never published in its original form, considered too full of 'vulgarity and uncleanness'. This edition presents, for the first time, his original work, after a century and a half of censorship. The jacket has some tiny tears at the top of the spine and bottom of the front. Otherwise, the book itself is "as new" 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
